新井先生の89歳の誕生日に On the 89th birthday of Dr. S. Arai.
4月1日に新井重光先生は89歳の誕生日を迎えられました。新井先生は私が名古屋大学農学部の土壌学研究室で勉学・研究していた頃の恩師です。写真に写っているもう一人の男性は鈴木正昭先生で、この方も私の名古屋大学土壌学研究室時代の恩師です。鈴木先生は名古屋大学の助手時代にフィリピンのIRRIの土壌微生物学研究室（吉田富男先生の時代）で１年間ほど研究をしておられました。
ここに示した写真は、私がJICA土壌診断コース（帯広）の研修員さんたちを引率して2012年7月19日にJICA筑波センターを訪問した時に、鈴木先生が撮ってくださったものです。
写真の女性は Mrs. Maribel Jalalon で研修員の一員でした。新井先生はMaribel さんが所属するフィリピン・マニラの Bureau of Soils and Water Management に農水省から派遣されていたことがあり、そのためMaribelさんとは以前から知り合いでした。
これらの事情で、研修の合間の時間に筑波在住の新井先生、鈴木先生とお会いする機会を持った次第です。
昔の写真ファイルを眺めていたら、偶然これらの写真に再会しましたので、ちょうど新井先生の誕生日でもあることから記念にここにアップロードすることにしました。
Today, April 1, is the 89th birthday of Dr. Shigemitsu Arai.
He was my teacher while I was studying at the soil science laboratory of Nagoya University.
Another gentleman on the photo is Dr. Masa-aki Suzuki, who was also my teacher at the above soil science laboratory. He was also a visiting researcher at IRRI Soil Micro Lab when he was young.
These photos were taken by Dr. Suzuki, when I visited JICA Tsukuba center with the trainees of JICA Soil Diagnosis Course in July 2012. The training course was mainly held at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and the trainees made a study tour to Tsukuba and Tokyo during the course.
The lady on the photo is Mrs. Maribel Jalalon, who was one of the trainees of the above mentioned training course.
Dr. Arai had been a visiting scientist at her institute, Bureau of Soils and Water Management, in the Philippines, and we had an occasion to meet together.
A gigantic earthquake occurred in Myanmar on 28. March. I still have not heard of the safety of many of my friends in Myanmar on 3. April.
I express my deep sympathy to my friends and the people in Myanmar who are affected by the gigantic earthquake today. I hope you are safe and recover from the damage quickly.
I am anxious about my friends who are suffering from the calamity of gigantic earthquake in Myanmar. I wish all of you are safe, surviving and getting over the difficult situation.

4月23日は「入門化学」の２回目の講義（非常勤）を行いました。
午前中は雨が降りそうな天気だったのですが、講義が終わった２時半頃から快晴になったので、近くの農業高校の森に「コゴミ」（クサソテツの新芽）を採りに行ってきました。Face Book の過去の思い出で去年の同じ日にコゴミを採ったことが書かれていたためです。コゴミはまだ例年と比べると小さかったですが、採取する範囲を拡げてなんとか今晩のおかずになりそうなくらい採取しました。コゴミの採取の間にギョウジャニンニクとユキザサも見つけたので採ってきました。ギョウジャニンニクは今までここでは採ったことがなく意外でした。ユキザサもまだ出始めでほんのわずかしかありませんでした。
In the past, it also snowed during the golden week (national holidays week) in May, the months free from snow are only four months from June to September in Obihiro.
Crops should grow in these four months, and provide harvest. It is a hard work both for crops and farmers.
